Shel Israel on the Normalization of Blogging
Normal Button.jpgShel, thanks for the insights.  I've had the privilege of speaking with Jeremiah Owyang and I admire his passion for blogging.

I'm looking forward to your new emphasis on Web 2.0 services at your blog.  Merely having a blog won't excite as many people a year from now.  However, disseminating relevant information and helping people find what they want will always be welcome, no matter what the format.

I often find myself writing about different Web 2.0 services at my blog about business blogging.  Why?  Because my readers need to know what tools to use to make their blogging experience great - they're typically past the "What's a post, what's a feed and what's a blog?" stage.

"Normalization" - nice way to put it.  It's okay if more people yawn now when they hear the word "blog."  That's how it is with any new thing.  What matters is not whether we continually come out with attention-grabbing things, but how we use what is available to provide useful services for others.

That's my Saturday night epistle.  Your thoughts?

Thanks for this thoughtful extension to the conversation.

Shel, you're the fastest commenter in the West tonight. Thanks for such quick recognition of my humble thoughts. (Reminds me, I've gotta keep reading your and Robert's book!)

Hi Easton and Shel, sounds like I missed an interesting conference. This is the direction I was heading in when I suggested we (an ill-defined we, I admit) put the crowns and pillories away and move on from lionizing or villifying the medium of blogging. I'm glad to hear that the conference's audience seemed to reflect some such shift.

Good to hear from you, earthling. As the word "blog" loses its novelty and the concept of blogging ceases to baffle, dazzle or annoy, some will probably try to rekindle all of the above by pointing out that process. But regardless of what people say, the tools that make Web publishing easier will remain and will continue to evolve, as will the various business models that use those tools.
