Why Should You Create A Business Blog?
Wayne Hurlbert offers some excellent advice for anyone wondering whether starting a business blog is a good idea.  Some of his main points, with my thoughts added:

1. A blog doesn't have to be a personal online journal.  A blog is merely a publishing tool that allows to post anything you want on the Web in a matter of seconds.  It keeps your latest content at the top of each page, allows others to comment at your website, and automatically archives everything you publish.  So if you're afraid to blog about your business because you think no one else is doing it, you're wrong.  Otherwise what would I be doing writing about corporate blogging all the time :)?

2. A blog can be a superior communications tool.  Not only can you make people all over the world aware of your business at very little cost with a blog, but you can also use your blog to find others who are interested in the same things you are or who have businesses similar to yours.  The blog thus becomes a wonderful marketing and social networking tool, enabling you to find and work with people you might never otherwise have met.  Oh, and if you allow people to comment at your blog, you thus create a public forum where you can receive free adivce and feedback on your products and services.  This, in turn, will help you improve your business more quickly.

3. Blogging makes spreading news and information about your business simple and easy.  All you need to do is learn how to use the tools around you to your advantage - for example, claiming your blog with a "live search" engine like Technorati can help drive lots of targeted traffic to your blog, thereby leading more interested souls to your virtual doors and increasing in turn the success and profitability of your business.

4. Blogs are very search engine-friendly.  If you don't believe me, try searching for any new product or hot news topic in Google, Yahoo!, or MSN.  Chances are that many of the top search results will be from recent blog posts - and by recent, I'm talking perhaps two or three days in many cases.  Much of the traffic to Business Blog Wire comes from search engines - without me having to spend a nickel on advertising.  People just naturally find my blog because it shows up in their search results.  Search engines love fresh, relevant, intelligent content, and a good blog reaps the benefits of their tastes.

Echoing Wayne, I'd suggest that you look into business blogging and ask yourself if you can afford not to start a corporate blog of your own.

I welcome your responses below.
