Monitoring the Blogosphere - Part 3: Setting Up Search Feeds
In Part 3 of this continuing series on monitoring the blogosphere, we'll discuss how to set up search feeds to save you time and bring you instant updates on news that interests you in the blogosphere.

Part 2: The Best Free Tools

Here is a simple recipe for setting up search feeds in a feedreader:

1. Go to a blog search engine and search for something.  For example:
- Search Technorati for corporate blogging
- Search IceRocket for "Mike Sansone"
- Search Google Blog Search for "business blog"

2. Convert the search results into an automatically updated feed and coyp the resulting URL.  For example:
- In Technorati, click "Add to Watchlist" (you need a free Technorati account first); then right-click on "View in RSS format" on your Watchlist page and copy the feed URL
- In IceRocket, right-click on "RSS 2.0 Feed" at lower right and copy the feed URL
- In Google Blog Search, right-click on one of the Atom/RSS feed URLs at lower left and copy the feed location

3. Import the search feed into a feedreader.  For example:
- In NewsGator Online, click "Add Feeds" at top left, choose the "URL & Import" tab, paste in the feed URL from step 2 and hit "Add Feed."
- In Bloglines, in the "My Feeds" tab, click "Add," paste in the feed URL, and hit "Subscribe."

You're done!  Now all you have to do is check your feedreader regularly for new search results to automatically appear.  You'll save time, and time is money.

Hey Easton - instant updates is a good choice of words. Thanks for the reminder that there are tools to save time in getting clued in on the things that interest us in blog-land.

And the 'How to' angle on setting up search feeds might be just what we need to relieve some of our overload.

PS - I'm having trouble getting my coComment application to work when commenting on your blog. Have you heard anything like that before?

Nice work, Easton. You've been power-posting lately!

Thanks, Darren. Your Blog Republic blog is a fantastic resource for bloggers looking to make money.

Susan, I use coComment a ton and it's working fine on my blog right now. Sometimes it seems to have problems with some or even all blogs, but the service continues to improve. I'll blog soon about my newly evolved comment tracking habits - I've started using Commentful to help me now.

I'm concerned how I can not miss out on what is being said, while not having to sift through tons of content on the topic.

any ideas?

I use bloglines and find the "Easy Subscribe bookmarklet" the easist & best way to save any feed, including search feeds. what's also great about the marklet is that when you are faced with that full page of code on an RSS click you just zap it into bloglines. The marklet is found on the page you paste the url

Thanks to both of you for your comments. Ming, my suggestions is to grab search feeds for keywords and phrases that closely match your blog's topic or subjects you want to keep on top of. While you probably will have to sift through some duplicate matches, it's a really fast way of getting up to speed on what's being said in the world.
