Business Blog Help: Why Blog? Know Your Blogging Reasons

I enjoyed Rick Cockrum's riff on why he blogs.  This meme is worthy at least of some introspection, if not also a blog post.  But Rick did tag me.  So here's a blog post. :)

Rick's best line: "I blog out of arrogance, teaching, learning, relationships, and mercenary motives. But any way you look at it, it’s about me talking to you, and you talking to me."

A couple of thoughts emerge from that.

First - yes, let's admit it, most of us blog at least partly to serve ourselves.  I'm writing this, among other reasons, to get you to know me and like me.  I'd love it if you became a longtime Business Blog Wire reader and feed subscriber and commenter.  It would be great if you came to know and like the Know More Media blog network via this blog.  More visitors and connections for our company means more advertising opportunities.  Feed my family.  Etc. etc.

But of course there's a smidgen of selflessness, too (grant me at least a smidgen, pretty please!).  Okay, hopefully a lot more than a smidgen.  I want you to be smarter about business blogging after meeting me.  I want you to (gasp) feel better about yourself and more confident in your blogging abilities.  Knowing I've made a positive difference in your life would validate the existence of this blog faster than anything else.  It's why I wanted to start this blog in the first place.

So why do I blog?  Like Rick, I've got lots of reasons.  Sometimes a post is born here because blogging is part of my job description ... sometimes because I feel guilty about leaving this space empty ... sometimes because I have a half-baked idea I need your help to finish and frost.  (Don't tell me you like your fully-baked idea cake unfrosted.)

But above all I blog - I should blog - I blog to serve you.  A lesser reason just doesn't satisfy my mind.  I think corporate blogs and personal professional blogs ought to blog for that ultimate reason too - to make the world a better place for having been blogged in.

I'll pass this along to Liz, Phil, Christine, Mike and Ann - no pressure to continue the chain, guys, but I would like to hear back from you if this has stirred any thoughts.  Thanks again to Rick for stirring the pot.

So ... why do you blog?  Or why don't you blog?  Let's hear some reasons.

Hi Easton,

In anything we do, if it isn't fulfilling we won't continue doing it, or won't do it well. Financial rewards are fulfilling, but nothing like the buzz you get from knowing you've helped someone else improve their life.

Thank you for responding so quickly and eloquently.

No problem Rick.

Hi Easton! Thanks for visiting Cooler Insights and hope you found it at least an amusing read. I do enjoy reading your blog full of business and marketing tips and have added it on my feedreader! ;)

Like you I also blog partially for my readers to provide them with useful advice and tips on business, marketing and entrepreneurship. Its also an interesting form of catharsis for my "inner consultant" since I don't really do that in my current day job.

Hi Easton!

I've asked myself this question a lot. I blog for many of the same reasons we've heard before - to get to know others and to let them get to know me, to learn, to listen, to be involved, as a writing outlet, etc.

Most of my reasons are social or business related (learning more about my profession, perhaps interesting a potential client here or there).

Being out on my own, I have no water cooler around which to learn from my colleagues - this is my substitute!

Hope you're well - thanks for the tap!

Ann

Thanks for coming here, Ann and Walter. I hope we all blog for good reasons - I know there's a touch of idealism in what we're all sharing here, but I think that's a good thing - we ought to be striving for a greater level of professionalism all the time.

Hi Easton,

What a terrific question! Originally, I looked forward to really building myself out as a thought leader on various leadership and business topics and being a wealth of related resources and information.

However, I spread myself too thin. As demands from client consulting work grew and the number of my personal/business blogs grew, my ability to produce the amount of original, quality content intended suffered. I would find myself wanting to do a related or resource entry just to get a posting up.

Interestingly, I am embracing the "less is more" philosophy moving forward and letting go of a couple of my blogs that are diluting quality time (and draining energy) I want to spend on nurturing my favorites--where my passions lie and it is so easy to create awesome content and they energize me!

And that's a hard decision to make sometimes, Derrick. Right now I'm in a mode where I've had to cut back my posting on a few different blogs in order to focus on the one or two most critical things ... and it's caused me to reflect on what's really most important - forging meaningful relationships with other people, teaching people what I know and learning from them, etc. Thanks for leaving the fine comment and I hope we can communicate a lot about blogging with each other down the road.

I write a blog so I don't forget what happened today and more importantly, yesterday. I don't think I have the interest in people wanting to read it, but I don't have a job depending on it either.

Thanks Antonio. That's actually a great reason to keep a blog, whether personal or public - to simply have a record of your life's events and your responses to the things happening in the world.
