Blog Review Question 1: Monthly Blog Traffic

We will now discuss Question #1 of 200 blog review questions to help you improve your blog and review blogs. The Ultimate Blog Review Guide e-book covers all 200 questions in detail.

Blog Review Question #1: How many visits and page views does the blog receive each month?

Why Blog Traffic Matters

Blog traffic and ad revenue tend to go hand-in-hand. For example:

  • If you plan to monetize your blog using CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) banner ads, then every page view means money in your pocket.
  • If you sell CPC (cost-per-click) or CPA (cost-per-action) ads on your blog, then more traffic typically means more ad revenue - provided that it is relevant traffic.
  • If you sell text links at your blog, traffic is less important, but a high amount of traffic may help you justify higher fees for text links.

More traffic also means more chances to sell products or services via your blog.

The more page views per visit, the better.

The higher your rate of increase in traffic over time, the better.

How Much Blog Traffic Do You Need?

Probably less than you might think. Many bloggers make hundreds of dollars a month from blogs that receive less than 1,000 page views per day (30,000 page views per month). On the hand, some blogs receive millions of visits each month and fail to generate a significant amount of revenue. The amount of traffic you need in order to achieve your blogging goals will depend on the niche in which you are blogging and the nature of your blog advertising or monetization efforts.

Blog Traffic Analysis Tips

  • Measure your traffic regularly - at least once a month.
  • Pay attention to sudden rises or falls in your traffic.
  • Avoid OCTCD - obsessive-compulsive traffic-checking disorder. Check traffic as needed. Anything more than once a day for 5 minutes is probably excessive.
  • Learn where most of your blog visitors come from. Is it Google? Is it StumbleUpon? Is it a related blog?

How do you feel about visitors versus page views ... ie pages per visit? I'm personally more concerned with bringing a larger number of people into my audience, but that might simply be because it's an easier thing to do. I've noticed that people look at more pages on my main site than on my blog, and wonder if that's a natural side effect of blogging, or cause for alarm?
