Blog Review Question #32: How many broken links are there? (check at W3C)
There's a chance I might rephrase this to something like, "How appropriate and functional are the links that appear on the blog?" But just counting the number of broken links is a good exercise for a few reasons.
First, it's always good to fix busted links. I know there are quite a few free websites / downloadable programs that check your website for errors in code and messed up links. Later I'll add some links to those link-checkers. Anyway, broken links look bad to humans and machines alike - they tend to hurt your traffic and search engine rankings.
Second, it can be a good indication of the carefulness of the blogger. Is she so addicted to the "Publish" button that she sometimes neglects to review her post draft for spelling errors and broken links?
Third, from small things come great things. And the little details can become impediments - or boons - to blogging success.
I guess as a qualification to the above, I ought to mention that sometimes links just break through no fault of the linker. For example, the sites linked to might die out and the links cease to function. Or finicky publishing software might throw a last-minute wrench into the link code and break the link.
So just be patient when you encounter broken links. After all, most blogs have comments and/or easy-to-see contact information whereby you can tell the author about the problem.
