I enjoyed Rick Cockrum's riff on why he blogs. This meme is worthy at least of some introspection, if not also a blog post. But Rick did tag me. So here's a blog post.
Rick's best line: "I blog out of arrogance, teaching, learning, relationships, and mercenary motives. But any way you look at it, it’s about me talking to you, and you talking to me."
A couple of thoughts emerge from that.
First - yes, let's admit it, most of us blog at least partly to serve ourselves. I'm writing this, among other reasons, to get you to know me and like me. I'd love it if you became a longtime Business Blog Wire reader and feed subscriber and commenter. It would be great if you came to know and like the Know More Media blog network via this blog. More visitors and connections for our company means more advertising opportunities. Feed my family. Etc. etc.
But of course there's a smidgen of selflessness, too (grant me at least a smidgen, pretty please!). Okay, hopefully a lot more than a smidgen. I want you to be smarter about business blogging after meeting me. I want you to (gasp) feel better about yourself and more confident in your blogging abilities. Knowing I've made a positive difference in your life would validate the existence of this blog faster than anything else. It's why I wanted to start this blog in the first place.
So why do I blog? Like Rick, I've got lots of reasons. Sometimes a post is born here because blogging is part of my job description … sometimes because I feel guilty about leaving this space empty … sometimes because I have a half-baked idea I need your help to finish and frost. (Don't tell me you like your fully-baked idea cake unfrosted.)
But above all I blog - I should blog - I blog to serve you. A lesser reason just doesn't satisfy my mind. I think corporate blogs and personal professional blogs ought to blog for that ultimate reason too - to make the world a better place for having been blogged in.
I'll pass this along to Liz, Phil, Christine, Mike and Ann - no pressure to continue the chain, guys, but I would like to hear back from you if this has stirred any thoughts. Thanks again to Rick for stirring the pot.
So … why do you blog? Or why don't you blog? Let's hear some reasons.
